The Center for Gary Snyder Studies

The Center for Gary Snyder Studies, the initial setting up of which was authorized by the Poet Laureate of Deep Ecology Gary Snyder himself in 2009, was founded in 2015 at Hunan University by Professor Joan Qionglin Tan and is now housed at SFS,  Shanghai University of Finance and Economics with Snyder’s own autography in 2019. A roster of distinguished national and international scholars are members of the Advisory Board with Professors Scott Slovic and Patrick D. Murphy acting as honorary directors. The Center not only focuses on the poet’s oeuvre, manuscript, lifestyle, and the ecological concerns that underpin his activist work, but also seeks to promote research into the interdisciplinary study of ecocriticism, ecopoetics, ekphrasis, interpretation and mediation between Chinese and Western texts, and environmental ethics. All scholars around the world with a sense of fellowship of like-minded ecological awareness are welcomed to connect, share research, and participate in activities central to our community.

Eco-manifesto of the Center

I pledge allegiance to the soil

of our land,

and to the beings who thereon dwell

one ecosystem

in diversity

under the sun

With joyful interpenetration for all.

(From Gary Snyder’s “For All”, but the second line “of Turtle Island”

is changed into “of our land” due to different cultures)
