Abstract

This study investigates how beginner Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learners in Denmark perceive the difficulty of the target language and what pedagogical factors can change their perceived difficulty level during a course using task-based teaching and learning (TBTL) pedagogy. A mixed-methods approach is used for data generation, including quantitative and qualitative data from pre- and post-course surveys with 188 participants, interviews with 44 learners, and observations of 9 classes. The findings indicate participants changed their views on the overall difficulty of learning the Chinese language after completing the course. Identified pedagogical factors that may motivate student learning and reduce perceived language difficulty include: having native-speaking teachers who prioritise intercultural pedagogy and student-centred learning, starting with a language-character separation, i.e. the teaching of Chinese in Western transcription before tackling the writing of characters, and using a holistic approach integrating language and culture via interactive practices that learners can associate with real-life experiences. Although TBTL pedagogy can motivate learners at the early stages of learning Chinese as a foreign language, their low linguistic proficiency and different learning preferences could limit learning from team interactions that use the target language during task processes. Because of the same limitation, collaborative learning may have a dual impact of motivating beginning learners on the one hand, and confusing students with misleading pronunciations on the other.
