Integrating Instruction and Assessment in Higher Education
Assessment is one of the most difficult challenges for 21st century learning. Students are often asked to work on group projects, in which it is difficult to ascertain who has learned what. There also are difficulties in assessing creative works, such as designs. Formative assessment — assessment that is carried out while the learning process is still ongoing, and with a view to improve learning — is becoming important, but difficult to implement in higher education. This talk will explore these problems drawing from our recent experience at the University of Hong Kong. I will discuss the alignment of collaborative learning and assessment in the contexts of contemporary theories of learning and 21st educational goals, and outline some approaches to addressing the issues.
